Lighting up the library for Remembering Srebrenica
Friday 11 July 2025
After sunset on Friday 11 July, the exterior façade of the Library of Birmingham will be lit up green and white for Remembering Srebrenica 2024.
Remembering Srebrenica 2025
Fifty years after the world said “never again” to the horrors of the Holocaust, genocide took place on European soil.
The name Srebrenica has become synonymous with those dark days in July 1995 when, in the first ever United Nations declared safe area, thousands of men and boys were systematically murdered and buried in mass graves. The victims, who were Muslim, were selected for death because of their identity.
This was the worst atrocity on European soil since World War II.
Remembering yesterday, act today
Every year, Remembering Srebrenica chooses a theme to help people think about the past and learn from it.
The theme for 2025 is ‘Remember yesterday, act today’.
This means we should not only remember what happened but also take action to stop hate and unfair treatment in the world today.
Even though the genocide happened in 1995, it still matters now. Sadly, hate and violence still happen in many places. That’s why it’s important to learn from the past and stand up for kindness, fairness, and peace.
In the UK and around the world, we can all help by treating others with respect and speaking out against hate. Every small action counts.
As we come together this year to mark the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, let us all pledge to ‘Remember Yesterday, Act Today’.
